Remember the Alligators

There’s an old saying, “When you’re up to your neck in alligators, it’s easy to forget that you climbed into the tank to pull the plug.”

Keeping perspective and staying the course during turbulent times is extremely difficult. I’m reminded of similar life experiences where perception and fear replaced objectivity.

As an avid hiker, I’ve climbed Mt. Whitney numerous times. Each trip was an entirely different experience. The first time, the sky was overcast and foggy. Though my view was obscured, I was commited to the 22-mile hike. The last few yards were exhilarating-- without fear, I proudly marched toward the summit. However, on my next trip, the sky was crystal clear and the sun was bright. As I approched the last few yards, I got a good look at what the fog had previously hidden: a 3,000 foot sheer drop-off. I suddenly found myself crawling the final stretch. It was the same trail, the same elevation, but suddenly I could see what was there. The trail was wide enough, and I certainly wasn’t going to fall, but fear had taken over and objectivity was lost.

That is exactly what is happening today. In the current market environment, it’s difficult to discern real from imagined concerns. We worry about “what if" more than “what is” and quickly lose objectivity. As you set your long-term goals, remember that we’re here to help.

Storms come and go, trails take detours, but brighter days are always ahead. Here's to the future!
