President's Letter by Dr. Dennis K. Barker
Keeping the Balance
As the school year begins again, I think back to when I was just a young man, preparing to graduate from college. I thought graduation meant being free from study, enjoying my time as I pleased. That was before I attended the Commencement Ceremony. Although I can’t remember the speaker's name, I think I'll always remember his message. He emphasized that graduation was to serve as a precursor to a new beginning instead of a congratulations on the end of schooling. In fact, it was the beginning of something greater. Now that I had completed my years of schooling, I had a new responsibility to "grow myself".
Personal growth became a discipline that I had to develop and maintain. It was not a onetime event, but an ongoing process that encompassed every aspect of my being. During my years in medical training, I learned about Dr. Hugh Cabot’s “Cross of Life.” Dr. Cabot was a physician teaching at Harvard Medical School whose foundation was built on a four-pronged cross. Each rung of the cross represented a different area of life. The rungs include: work, play, love, and worship.
Over the next 30 years of my life, I spent most of my time trying to balance building my business while simultaneously raising a family. At first, developing the right habits were difficult to create and implement. As I realized the importance of living in balance, it soon became second nature.
Life changes at a dramatic pace. So while you’re charting the course of your life journey be sure to keep in mind the four rungs of the cross. Be sure to take time to smell the flowers along the way and share with your loved ones how much they really mean to you. Life is full of both challenges and opportunities-- a journey more easily enjoyed with our Cross of Life in balance.
Here is to the future.
